  • SHIM STATEMENT

A shim is a thin, tapered piece of material, used to fill small gaps or spaces between objects.[1] Shims are typically used in order to support, adjust for better fit, or provide a level surface.

At SHIM, we recognized a need in the art community that we have observed time and time again: people and organizations that have ideas for incredible exhibitions and projects, but who lack the resources to run and operate a gallery full time. SHIM collects exhibition proposals from such groups and awards space, rent-free, based on the merits of the projects that apply, freeing these exhibitors from the burden of owning or renting a space and allowing them instead to focus their resources on presenting incredible art to the public.

    Reduce your cost.

    Reuse existing spaces.

    Recycle our networks.

SHIM finds more efficient ways to seek and solicit new galleries, institutions, or affiliations who need space to host a gallery show or residency that cannot be accommodated by the traditional art gallery model. Our mission is to reduce the risks and costs associated with owning or renting a gallery space in order to support undiscovered creative talents from around the country and around the world.

Through our programs, we provide time, space, and a supportive community where individuals are inspired to develop ideas, explore new areas of practice, and focus on artistic development without the stresses of finding a space to do it.

    Support. Improvise. Adjust. Level.

  •  TEAM SHIM

Untethered from a leash... or a lease?

THE PROBLEM: The cost of owning and operating space can really limit your vision. Vast numbers of artists—dancers, poets, painters, and other creatives—eagerly seek space to exhibit their work, but despite the many galleries around the country, securing space remains a struggle.

It’s no secret that many talented artists outside the exclusive, mainstream art world struggle to show their work. The truth is that the current gallery model, while benefiting a select few artists, leaves most with little means to express themselves. At SHIM we are excited to introduce a new model that serves the undiscovered creative talents of the world.

    ENTER SHIM.

    SHIM(s) fill gaps.

Our company was initially inspired by the rise of the shared digital economy. Small, and nimble startups like AirBNB, Zip Car, and Uber have discovered a booming marketplace inside already existing industries. Rather than building more infrastructures, these companies found new opportunities for what already exists. By re-adapting underutilized, pre-existing infrastructures, an economy of scarcity could be transformed with little cost.

SHIM uses similar strategies to disrupt the art world gallery model. Here, we find ways in which more users can access gallery space without having to rent it outright or create a gallery of their own. This frees an enormous amount of capital (both creative and actual) that is currently being wasted on an over-emphasis on autonomous ownership.

  • OPPORTUNITIES

    - For Artists -

Individual artists may submit their work for inclusion in one of SHIM's Invitational group exhibitions, currently held twice each year. All applications are held and considered for inclusion in SHIM projects for 12 months after submission.

SHIM Invitational exhibitions run for two weekends, and exhibiting artists keep 100% of all sales.

SHIM Invitational 3 will take place in November 2016 at the SHIM home gallery in Brooklyn, NY.

Click here to view the application and submit your work for consideration!

    - For Galleries and Curators -

Through our SHIM SPACE application, we accept proposals for amazing, weird, and game-changing shows from curators, galleries, and affiliations from around the world.

Accepted projects are awarded one month of exhibition space. Unlike the art fair or pop-up event models and their high cost/short time exposure, a SHIM SPACE acts as a portable gallery: there when you need it, and at an affordable cost.

By awarding free space to our applicants, SHIM liberates exhibitors from the burden of owning or renting space, allowing them instead to focus their resources on presenting incredible art to the public.

Click here to view the application and submit your project for consideration!

CAN I APPLY FOR A SHIM INVITATIONAL and A SHIM SPACE? HOW OFTEN CAN I APPLY?

Applicants can apply for both a SHIM Invitational and a SHIM SPACE once per year.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis all year long, and once received, your application will be kept under consideration for all SHIM exhibition opportunities as they arise for a 12 month period, starting with our planned schedule of projects at our gallery in Brooklyn, NY.

    HOW ARE THEY CHOSEN?

All SHIM SPACE awardees and Invitational participants are chosen by a selection committee organized by SHIM.

Criteria considered during the selection process include:

SHIM's selection committee will award exhibition opportunities to approved applicants in view of the criteria outlined above, and will contact finalists to confirm their availability and commitment 3 months prior to the scheduled start of their project.

SHIM's programs are designed out of a desire to broaden opportunities for numerous constituencies in the art world. We are committed to a transparent and inclusive process for reviewing all of the applications we receive, and guarantee all of our approved applicants access to, at minimum, an open feedback system for their proposals.

SHIM SPACE awardees are generally responsible for most aspects of their project's execution once awarded, from curation, to installation and deinstallation, to gallery staffing and advanced promotion and sales.

As hosts, SHIM can provide additional services and support as needed beyond the exhibition space itself. Additional services we can provide include:
