SHIM is an advocate for the self-empowered. We help artists and groups present professional quality exhibitions BY AND FOR themselves. No gallery commissions. No lease.
SHIM is a full service arts management company dedicated to changing the artists/gallery relationship by "leveling the field".
SHIM's flagship location exists within ArtHelix gallery in Bushwick, Brooklyn. A space within a space -- the SHIM model.
Untethered from a leash... or a lease.
It’s no secret that many talented artists outside the exclusive, mainstream art world struggle to show their work. The current gallery model, while benefiting a select few artists, leaves most with little means to express themselves. At SHIM we are excited to introduce a new model that serves the undiscovered creative talents of the world.
SHIM fills gaps.
Our company was inspired by the rise of the shared digital economy. Innovative startups like AirBNB, Zip Car, and Uber have discovered a booming marketplace inside already existing industries. Rather than building more infrastructures, these companies found new opportunities for what already exists.
SHIM uses similar strategies to disrupt the art world gallery model. Here, we find ways in which more users can access gallery space without having to rent it outright or create a gallery of their own. Our goal in bringing the shared economy to the art world is to allow our users access to the enormous amount of capital (both creative and actual) currently being expended on autonomous ownership.

4 WAYS TO JOIN
#1 JOIN FOR FREE
SHIM reserves one spot in each of our Invitational exhibitions for a free FOLLOWSHIP Member, chosen by our team from our social media networks.
WHY: It's the simplest way to stay up to date on all of SHIM's programs, and an easy way to share your work with us!
#2 JOIN AS AN ARTIST
Individual artists may submit their work for inclusion in one of SHIM's Invitational group exhibitions, currently held twice each year.
SHIM Invitational 4 will take place in March 31 - April 16, 2017 at ArtHelix in Brooklyn, NY.
The application deadline for SHIM Invitational 4 is February 19th, 2017.
WHY: SHIM Invitationals are the simplest individual artist initiative that can lead to your work in an exhibition and you keeping the profits (all of them).
#3 JOIN AS A CONNECTOR
Connectors in the SHIM system are empowered to curate and coordinate groups that act as a gallery for a short period of time, and are in charge of assembling and leading the team of artists that will exhibit.
PREPARE a proposal
Proposals we select are subject to a one-time exhibitor fee: $100 per artist.
SHIM actively wants it's Connectors to succeed, and are here to coach them through the entire process. Connectors are also given the opportunity to mount a solo exhibition of their own work!
WHY: SHIM liberates Connectors from the burden of owning or leasing a space, allowing them instead to focus their resources on presenting incredible art to the public.
#4 JOIN AS A GALLERY
SHIM is interested in working with galleries nationally and internationally to allow them to exhibit their artists in our New York location (and beyond as they become available).
SHIM is also eager to create a network of interconnected galleries around the world that can host SHIM exhibitions for our members.
WHY: Unlike the art fair or pop-up event models and their high cost/short time exposure, a SHIM SPACE acts as a portable gallery: there when you need it, and at an affordable cost.

UNIVERSITIES & ORGANIZATIONS
SHIM offers a range of art exhibition services for universities and other organizations that are interested in mounting exhibitions and events for their members. Whether showcasing university arts programs, creating unique corporate and fundraising events, or even supporting university alumni to organize themselves without their university's funding, we can tailor to fit your specific needs and are here to coach you through the whole process.
SHIM can use it’s own gallery in Bushwick - a 2,500sf space - or secure a gallery in another city for you. We also help to manage all aspects of the exhibition to make your project a success.
SHIM helps you promote and expand the scope of your university or organization's programming beyond your walls. Together we can create art events that connect disparate groups into one large community, creating much broader and unique outreach to donors, and magnifying the profile of your brand nationally and internationally.

HOW MANY PROPOSALS ARE ACCEPTED?

We plan to expand our programming to accommodate more applicants in more places around the country in 2017.
CAN I APPLY FOR A SHIM INVITATIONAL and A SHIM SPACE? HOW OFTEN CAN I APPLY?
Applicants can apply for both a SHIM Invitational and a SHIM SPACE once per year.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis all year long, and once received, your application will be kept under consideration for all SHIM exhibition opportunities as they arise for a 12 month period, starting with our planned schedule of projects at our gallery in Brooklyn, NY.
HOW ARE THEY CHOSEN?
All SHIM SPACE awardees and Invitational participants are chosen by a selection committee organized by SHIM.
Criteria considered during the selection process include:
WHEN ARE THE DEADLINES FOR APPLICATIONS?
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis year-round for both the SHIM Invitational and SHIM SPACE programs. Your application will be kept on file and considered for all SHIM exhibition projects as they arise for 12 months after submission.
WHEN ARE WINNERS ANNOUNCED?
Once your application is submitted, SHIM's selection committee will review your application and notify you whether your application is approved for consideration. If necessary, we may request additional information from you about your work or exhibition proposal in order to adequately process your application.
SHIM's selection committee will award exhibition opportunities to approved applicants in view of the criteria outlined above, and will contact finalists to confirm their availability and commitment 3 months prior to the scheduled start of their project.
SHIM's programs are designed out of a desire to broaden opportunities for numerous constituencies in the art world. We are committed to a transparent and inclusive process for reviewing all of the applications we receive, and guarantee all of our approved applicants access to, at minimum, an open feedback system for their proposals.
WHAT AM I RESPONSIBLE FOR IF MY PROPOSAL IS ACCEPTED?
We’ll SHIM you in.
Both SHIM Invitational artists and SHIM SPACE exhibitors are responsible for the shipment/delivery of artwork to and from the gallery space.
SHIM Invitational exhibitions are installed, staffed, and promoted by SHIM (often with the artists' help!)
SHIM SPACE exhibitors are generally responsible for most aspects of their project's execution once awarded, from curation, to installation and deinstallation, to gallery staffing and advanced promotion and sales.
As hosts, SHIM can provide additional services and support as needed beyond the exhibition space itself. Additional services we can provide include:
